Travel, Currency and Money saving tips for Anguilla

The island's rich and varied history dates back to settlement by the Amerindians and Arawaks, with extraordinary rock art still being discovered in sites such as Fountain Cavern National Park. And unlike many nearby islands, the flat terrain makes it easy to get around by car, bicycle or quad bike. There's a catch, of course. Anguilla is no shoestring destination and authenticity comes at a premium here. Luxury hotels and private villas cater to jet-setters craving a vacation off the radar. Visit outside high season for a more affordable taste of paradise.

Its crystal-clear waters and vibrant reefs offer spectacular snorkeling, glass-bottomed kayaking, and sailing to tiny islets and atolls scattered offshore.

Anguilla is known for its pearly white sand.

What currency is used in Anquilla?

Anguilla's official currency like many of the of the former British islands in the area, is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, EC$ which is pegged to the US dollar at around EC$2.7=1US dollar. US dollars are accepted regularly (and legally) and generally prefered if not required. Credit cards are not always accepted, particularly in smaller establishments.

How to get around in Anquilla?

Car-rental companies issue the compulsory local driving permit for US$20 cash. Compact cars start from US$45 per day (usually US$5 cheaper in summer). Most companies don't have physical offices open to the public; book in advance to arrange pickup and drop-off. Driving is on the left-hand side of the road, but steering wheels can confusingly be on either the left or the right side of the car. The speed limit is 30mph unless signposted otherwise.

The best way to get around Anguilla is in a taxi, as the island is too spread out to explore on foot. You'll find the drivers make excellent tour guides, and driving yourself around town could be problematic, given the unpaved roads and virtually nonexistent street signs.Anguilla is divided into 10 taxi zones with fares depending on how many zones you travel through (ie one zone US$10, 10 zones US$36). Surcharges apply for rides after 6pm or for more than two people. Two-hour island tours for two people cost US$55. Drivers only accept US dollars.

Travel tips for Anquilla.

The best time to visit Anguilla is between May and August, when you stand the best chance of getting a good package deal and also avoiding the worst of the hurricane season (which generally runs from June 1 to November 30). Hotel prices are low from September to October, but selection is sparse – many properties close down during these months. The most expensive time to visit is from the early winter until spring when the weather is ideal.

All the beaches in Anguilla are public. Even if there is a hotel right on the beach there will be a public access path to the beach. At Cap Juluca there will be a public beach access parking lot and signs down to the beach. If you’re ever at a hotel just ask them where the public access path is.

Most people avoid getting lost when traveling but don’t be afraid to get lost in Anguilla. Turn down random roads and see where it brings you. The island is so small you won’t ever be too far from the main roads.
