Start with the way you expect to spend, withdraw or carry money, then compare the exchange rate and total cost for your trip.
Choose a currency to view current travel-money comparisons. You can change the base currency and amount in the live tool above.
The lowest-cost option can change with the currencies, amount, country, card plan and how you pay or withdraw. Compare the transaction you expect to make rather than relying on a provider's general pricing claim.
These products can let you hold or convert supported currencies and use a linked card overseas. Compare conversion charges, card fees, ATM allowances, supported currencies and what happens when a balance is insufficient. A pre-converted balance may reduce uncertainty for that amount, but it does not guarantee that the rate was the most competitive available.
Cash remains useful where cards are not accepted, for small purchases and as a backup. Online ordering may provide a different rate from an airport counter or exchange bureau. Compare the total amount of foreign currency received, collection or delivery costs and any minimum order.
An existing bank card can be convenient, but foreign transaction, cash-advance and ATM fees may apply. When a merchant or ATM offers to convert the payment into your home currency, compare carefully: paying in the local currency usually lets your own card provider perform the conversion instead.
Use this as a checklist rather than a price quote. Actual rates, fees and product availability vary by country, provider and transaction.
| Option | Check before using | Common costs | Useful for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel or multi-currency card | Supported currencies, conversion timing, plan limits and card acceptance | Conversion, plan, card delivery, reload and ATM fees | Card spending, app-based management and selected ATM withdrawals |
| Foreign cash | Total currency received, collection or delivery and buy-back terms | Exchange-rate margin, delivery and minimum-order costs | Cash-only purchases, arrival expenses and emergency backup |
| Bank debit or credit card | Foreign transaction terms, cash rules and dynamic currency conversion | Foreign transaction, ATM, cash-advance and interest charges | Convenience where the card is accepted |
Travel-money products can be issued by different legal entities in different countries. Before applying or loading funds, review the terms for the entity serving you, how customer money is held or safeguarded, card-loss procedures and the complaints process. These arrangements can differ from bank deposit insurance.
There is no single best option for every trip. Compare travel cards, foreign cash and your existing bank cards for the currencies, amount and transactions you expect. Many travellers use a combination of card payments, limited cash and a backup card.
It can be useful to arrange some money before departure for transport or small arrival expenses. Whether to convert more in advance depends on the available rate, fees, your risk preference and access to cards or ATMs at the destination.
When a merchant or ATM offers dynamic currency conversion, the home-currency amount includes a conversion chosen by that operator. Selecting the local currency generally allows your own card provider to convert the transaction, but you should still check your card's exchange rate and fees.
Enter the currencies and amount in the live tool above. Compare the customer exchange rate, total cost and amount received, then confirm the final quote and product terms with the provider before proceeding.
