Best Currency Exchange Rates in Sydney: Cash, Cards and ATMs
A practical guide to spending and exchanging money in Sydney, including airport arrivals, Opal payments, card surcharges, ATMs and live Australian dollar comparisons.
Sydney travel money guide · Updated July 2026
Use a low-fee card for most spending and carry a little cash
Sydney is highly card-friendly across the CBD, Circular Quay, Darling Harbour, Bondi and major attractions. Contactless cards and mobile wallets suit most purchases and public transport. A small Australian-dollar cash reserve is still useful for a card problem, markets or businesses that prefer cash.
The quick answer
Compare your existing bank card with a low-cost travel account such as Wise or Revolut before arriving. Pay in Australian dollars when offered a currency choice, use the same card or device on public transport and withdraw only the cash you are likely to spend.
Choose by situation
A practical payment mix for Sydney
Check your card's foreign-transaction fee, overseas ATM charge and conversion limits before travelling. A familiar bank card can be convenient but expensive if it adds a percentage to every Australian-dollar purchase.
Hotels, restaurants and attractions
Low-fee contactless card
Cards and mobile wallets work for most everyday purchases. Keep a second physical card separate so a lost phone or blocked account does not stop your trip.
Trains, Metro, buses, ferries and light rail
Contactless or Adult Opal
Visitors paying an adult fare can tap with an accepted contactless card or device. Use one payment method per traveller and keep it consistent.
Markets and backup
A small amount of AUD
Cash can be useful at independent stalls or when a terminal is unavailable. Avoid carrying more than you expect to spend.
Rent, tuition or a large Australian bill
Online AUD transfer
For a larger payment, compare the final Australian dollars delivered by transfer providers instead of paying by foreign card or carrying cash.
Arriving at SYD
You can reach central Sydney without exchanging cash
Sydney Airport's train stations accept Adult Opal cards and eligible contactless cards or devices. The airport train is fast, but trips using the Domestic or International Airport stations include a separate Station Access Fee in addition to the rail fare.
01
Tap directly for the train
Use an accepted contactless card or device, or buy an Opal card. Keep the same payment method for the complete journey and tap off at your destination.
02
Compare the whole airport trip
For two or more travellers, compare the train's fares and Station Access Fees with the current taxi or rideshare quote to your actual accommodation.
03
Treat airport exchange as convenience
Sydney Airport has exchange counters and foreign-currency ATMs, but a walk-up airport exchange usually trades value for convenience. If you are departing Sydney and want foreign cash, pre-ordering online can secure a better rate before airport collection.

Pre-order Travelex Online before collecting at the airport
Do not confuse Travelex's online rate with the rate offered to a walk-up customer at an airport counter. Travelex says its online foreign-cash rates vary from its in-store rates and let you lock in its best available online rate before collection.
Best for
Australians who want some foreign notes before flying. Compare the live Travelex Online quote with card and ATM costs, order in advance if it is competitive, then collect at Sydney Airport rather than buying at the counter without an order.
01
Lock in the online rate
Place and pay for the order online. Check the exact foreign-currency amount, order minimum, payment method and collection date before confirming.
02
Collect before security
Sydney Airport online orders are currently collected from the Travelex store at T1 International Departures, Check-In F, on the landside before security. Confirm the location and opening hours shown with your order.
03
Delivery depends on eligibility
Travelex's terms allow home delivery for eligible cash orders, but availability and the delivery date depend on the order and address and are shown at checkout. Travelex and participating Australia Post collection points are alternatives.

Compare Travelex Online rates from Australian dollars
Airport cash is normally an expensive last-minute option. The useful exception is an online order priced before you travel: compare the final amount, reserve it only if it is competitive and collect the order at the nominated location.
Affiliate disclosure: Best Exchange Rates has a commercial relationship with Travelex and may receive a commission when readers use an eligible offer. This does not change the rate you should compare or our advice to check the final amount received.
Getting around
Contactless gives adult travellers Opal benefits
The Opal network covers Sydney Metro, trains, buses, ferries and light rail. Adult visitors can generally use an accepted contactless card or device and receive relevant fare caps and benefits without buying a separate Adult Opal card.
Tap correctly
Avoid default fares and duplicate charges
- Use the same card or device. A physical card, phone and watch are separate payment methods even when linked to one account.
- One person per card or device. Each traveller needs their own payment method or Opal card.
- Tap on and tap off. Missing a tap can trigger a default fare and may prevent the correct benefit or cap.
- Avoid card clash. Remove the intended card from your wallet before holding it near an Opal reader.
- Check issuer fees. Transport for NSW does not refund foreign-card charges applied by your bank.
A Sydney spending detail
Small card surcharges are common
Some Sydney cafés, restaurants and independent businesses add a visible surcharge for card payments. Under Australian rules, a card surcharge must not exceed the business's cost of accepting that payment type. Weekend or public-holiday surcharges are separate and can still apply.
Read the payment screen
Check the total before tapping. A low-fee travel card does not remove a surcharge charged by the merchant.
Debit may cost less
Where a business displays different surcharges, debit can be cheaper than credit. Your foreign card may still add its own conversion fee.
Cash is not automatically cheaper
Compare convenience, ATM charges and the risk of leftover notes. Saving a small surcharge may not justify a costly cash withdrawal.
At a glance
Compare ways to get and spend Australian dollars in Sydney
| Method | Useful for | Check before using | Sydney tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wise or Revolut | Card spending, conversion and some ATM withdrawals | Fees, plan allowances, weekend pricing and ATM limits | Compare Wise and Revolut with your current bank. |
| Your bank card | Contactless spending and Opal transport | Foreign-purchase, cash-withdrawal and merchant surcharge costs | A fee-free card may already be the simplest option. |
| Bank ATM | A modest cash withdrawal | Issuer fee, operator fee and conversion prompt | Choose AUD unless you deliberately accept the ATM's displayed home-currency conversion. |
| Travelex Online | Foreign cash ordered before departing Australia | Online quote, order minimum, lead time and collection or delivery terms | Compare the AUD online rate, then collect the prepaid order at the nominated location. |
| Exchange bureau | Buying or selling physical currency | Final AUD received after the rate and every charge | Compare CBD or online quotes rather than relying on the first airport offer. |
Cash exchange
Compare Sydney bureaux by the amount you receive
Sydney's CBD and Haymarket have multiple exchange counters, which makes comparison easier. Rates can change during the day and “no commission” does not mean there is no exchange-rate margin.
Before transacting
Ask three questions
- How many Australian dollars will I receive? Use the final amount, not an advertised market rate.
- Are there fees or minimum amounts? Include every charge in the comparison.
- Is the quote reserved? Confirm how long an online or telephone quote remains valid and what identification is required.

Bottom line
Card first, with a modest AUD backup
For most Sydney visitors, a low-fee contactless card plus a small amount of cash is more practical than exchanging the whole budget. Use one payment method consistently on Opal services, allow for the airport Station Access Fee and compare any cash exchange by the final dollars received.
