Outlook and forecasts for JPY and AUD

Whenever you are researching a particular exchange rate you are actually interested in two currencies as exchange rates are the ratio between two currencies.

So it follows that if you are determining the best time to transact, in this case the JPY vs AUD, you should pay attention to the forecasts and trends for both Japanese Yen and Australian Dollar:

Japanese Yen (JPY) outlook

The yen was the star performer in the weeks leading up to this report (May-17), with appreciation driven by a flight to safety following a serious escalation in the US-China trade war. The benchmark yen rate, USD/JPY, was down in the mid-109s, having been as high as 112.4 in late April. Relatively speaking, against their April highs, other yen rates had fallen even more (NZD/JPY was down from 76 to 71.6).

In May, HSBC warned against thinking that yen-supporting safe-haven flows would soon stop, implying that the yen could have more upside potential in the near term. The bank highlighted the “desolation and destruction” (an exaggeration) present in many major economies and currencies. “You can never get too high,” the bank’s chief analyst said.

Australian Dollar (AUD) outlook

At the start of the week the Australian dollar spiked back over US69¢ after the weekend’s surprise election result when the nation’s centre-right government managed to cling to power. Long-term election benefits for AUD aren’t expected, however.

The mid-April to mid-May period was a shocker for the Aussie. It suffered across-the-board losses, including losses worth 5 percent against the US dollar. An exchange rate of US68.6¢ on Friday May-17 was its lowest weekly closing rate since early 2016.

Most recently, a stuttering domestic economy and elevated trade tensions have driven the Aussie lower.

RBA interest rate cuts this year are now a certainty, and that doesn’t bode well for currency valuations. Westpac has predicted three cuts this year.

Why can't I just get the JPY/AUD market rate I see online or in the media?

The JPY/AUD mid-rate is the rate you will see quoted online or the news, nobody except the largest banks and businesses can get exchange rates close to this mid-rate. It is actually just the theoretical half-way point (hence mid-rate) between the last rate at which the JPY / AUD was traded (bought or sold) in the international markets.

Getting a good market rate is mainly about timing however the transaction margin you end up being charged can be considerably reduced by around a few percent (of total amount being exchanged) for travel money and possibly over 5% to 6% when sending money. The exact potential savings depends on the currencies being exchanged and the amount you are transferring and if you are willing to shop around.

Our real-time foreign transfer and travel money/cards comparison calculators make shopping around easy and help you calculate how much you can save.
