Compare Travel Money Cards: Fees, FX, ATMs and Features
A practical framework for comparing prepaid and multi-currency travel cards, including FX pricing, ATM allowances, unsupported currencies and backup planning.
Travel-card guide · Reviewed July 2026
Compare the trip, not the headline
A travel card can hold or convert currencies, support overseas purchases and provide ATM access. The right choice depends on the destination currencies, amount, conversion timing, cash needs and whether a free plan or subscription is involved.
Quick answer
No card is cheapest for every trip. Price the same destination currency and amount, then check ATM allowances, unsupported-currency rules, card costs and how remaining money can be withdrawn after travel.
Product structure
“Travel card” covers different models
Pre
Traditional prepaid travel card
Load funds before spending and allocate them to supported currencies. This can lock the amount of destination currency, but the provider's retail load rate determines the cost.
Multi
Multi-currency account card
Hold several balances and convert in an app or automatically at purchase. Conversion fees, plan allowances and weekend rules can vary.
Debit
Low-FX-fee debit card
An ordinary transaction account may include a debit card with no separate international transaction fee. It may use a card-network rate rather than a separately quoted conversion.

Total-cost framework
Seven prices to check
| Cost | When it can apply | How to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange-rate margin | Loading, converting or spending | Compare the customer rate with a mid-market reference at the same time |
| Conversion fee | Each exchange or after a plan allowance | Price the exact currency, amount, time and plan |
| Card and delivery | Initial issue, express delivery or replacement | Include the full setup cost for the trip |
| Subscription | Paid plan with higher limits or benefits | Multiply by the months kept and test whether benefits exceed the fee |
| ATM provider fee | After an amount or withdrawal-count allowance | Check both limits and the fee after either is reached |
| ATM operator fee | Charged by the machine owner | Read the ATM screen; the card cannot waive a third-party surcharge |
| Residual-balance fee | Inactivity, closure, refund or final conversion | Plan how unused funds will leave the account |

Compare the same spend
Select the home and destination currencies, use the amount you expect to load or spend, and review the rate timestamp and disclosed fees. Confirm the final quote with the provider.
Supported does not always mean holdable
Check how each destination currency works
Currency can be held
Pre-convert or convert at purchase
If the card supports a stored balance, you may convert before travel or allow the card to use that balance when charged. Pre-converting fixes the destination amount but gives up any benefit from a later favourable move.
Currency can be spent but not held
Automatic conversion rules apply
Some cards can process more currencies than they can store. Check the source balance, exchange-rate method, fee and whether a time- or plan-based charge applies.
Balance is insufficient
The fallback order matters
A card may convert another balance, draw from the home currency or decline the payment. A split across several balances can produce multiple conversions.
Merchant offers home currency
Decline dynamic currency conversion
Choose the destination's local currency unless you have deliberately compared and accepted the merchant or ATM conversion. DCC can bypass the balance you intended to use.
Cash access
“Free ATM withdrawals” needs context
Limit
Amount and count
An allowance may be capped by value, number of withdrawals or both. Check the reset date and whether domestic and overseas withdrawals are treated differently.
After
Fee after the allowance
The provider may charge a percentage, a fixed minimum, or both. Small repeated withdrawals can be disproportionately expensive.
Local
Operator surcharge
The ATM owner can add a fee even when the card provider charges nothing. The machine should display this before completion.
DCC
Currency choice
Select local currency to avoid an ATM's home-currency conversion unless its displayed rate is intentionally accepted.
Access and resilience
Compare what happens when something fails
Security features
Test before departure
- Freeze and unfreeze the physical card in the app.
- Review contactless, online, magnetic-stripe and ATM controls.
- Confirm how a lost card is replaced and how emergency cash works, if offered.
- Check whether app login or payment approval needs the home mobile number.
- Save an emergency support route outside the phone and wallet.
- Keep a separate backup card and modest cash reserve.
A prepaid balance limits access to the main bank account, but it does not make the money risk-free. Check the issuer, legal status of the account and applicable safeguarding or deposit-protection terms.
Shortlist worksheet
Compare cards in the same order
Nine checks
Before applying or loading
- Is the card available to residents of your country and can it arrive before departure?
- Can it hold or spend every important destination currency?
- What is the exact conversion cost for the expected amount?
- Does pricing change after a monthly limit or at weekends?
- What card, delivery, subscription and replacement charges apply?
- What ATM amount and count allowances apply, and when do they reset?
- How are unsupported currencies and insufficient balances funded?
- How can remaining funds be spent, withdrawn or refunded after the trip?
- What support, card-freeze and replacement process is available abroad?

Bottom line
Choose for the currencies and behaviour of this trip
The best comparison uses a real itinerary: where you will spend, how much cash you need, when you will convert and what happens to unused funds. A strong headline rate cannot compensate for an unsuitable currency, exceeded allowance or missing backup.
