Wise vs Revolut USA: Transfers, Cards and Travel Money

Compare Wise and Revolut for US international transfers, card spending, currency exchange, account details and ATM withdrawals.

Wise and Revolut comparison for US customers

Wise and Revolut both give US customers ways to hold currencies, spend abroad and send money internationally, but their pricing models are different. Wise charges per conversion and uses the mid-market exchange rate. Revolut combines a free Standard plan with paid Premium and Metal plans, each with different exchange, ATM and transfer benefits.

This comparison was checked on 18 July 2026 for US personal customers. Fees and limits can change, so use the figures below as a guide and confirm the final price in the provider's app before transacting.

Quick verdict

Wise may suit customers who want straightforward international transfers, a separately disclosed conversion fee and the mid-market exchange rate without paying a monthly subscription.

Revolut may suit customers who want a broader app-based money account and are comfortable choosing a plan. Premium and Metal can be attractive to frequent travellers or higher-volume users, but the subscription cost must be included when comparing value.

Neither provider is automatically cheaper for every customer. The result depends on the currencies, transfer amount, payment method, Revolut plan, timing of the exchange and whether the customer needs transfers, card spending, cash withdrawals or several of those services together.

Feature Wise Revolut US
Pricing model Pay per conversion or transfer; no monthly account subscription Standard is free; Premium and Metal charge monthly or annual subscription fees
Exchange-rate approach Mid-market rate with a separate conversion fee Revolut exchange rate with plan-based fair-usage and out-of-market-hours fees
Standard weekday exchange allowance No allowance model; the applicable fee is shown for each conversion Up to USD 1,000 per rolling month before a 0.5% fair-usage fee
Weekend or out-of-market-hours fee No separate weekend surcharge Standard: 1% from 5pm Friday to 6pm Sunday ET; Premium and Metal currently avoid this fee
US ATM pricing USD 250 monthly allowance, then USD 1.95 plus 1.95% per withdrawal No Revolut fee at in-network ATMs; plan-specific rules apply out of network
Best fit Transparent one-off conversions and international bank transfers Customers who will use enough app, card and plan features to justify their selected tier

Exchange rates and conversion fees

Wise says it converts supported currencies at the mid-market exchange rate and adds a separate fee. The fee varies by currency, amount and payment method and is displayed before confirmation. This separation makes it relatively easy to see the rate and the provider charge as distinct parts of the transaction.

Revolut uses its own Revolut exchange rate. Its US pricing then applies plan rules to eligible exchanges. Standard customers currently receive USD 1,000 of exchanges per rolling month without an additional fair-usage fee during market hours, after which a 0.5% fee applies. Premium has a USD 10,000 allowance before the same 0.5% fee, while Metal currently has no additional fair-usage fee.

Timing also matters for Revolut. The current US rules define foreign-exchange market hours as all times except 5pm Friday to 6pm Sunday Eastern Time. Standard customers pay an additional 1% for exchanges outside those hours. Premium and Metal customers currently do not pay that additional fee.

For a fair comparison, price the same currencies and amount at approximately the same time. A Wise transfer quote should not be compared with a Revolut Standard card exchange after the monthly allowance has already been used.

International transfers

Wise is primarily designed around international bank transfers. It shows the sender's fee, exchange rate, expected recipient amount and delivery estimate before payment. Available funding methods and their costs vary by route; a bank-funded transfer can price differently from a card-funded transfer.

Revolut does not charge for an eligible USD transfer to a US account, although it currently charges USD 10 for a domestic wire. International transfers can carry a Revolut fee, displayed in the app before sending. Premium currently receives a 20% discount on eligible international transfer fees and Metal a 40% discount. Intermediary institutions may still deduct charges on some international routes.

Customers making a one-off international transfer should compare the final recipient amount rather than focusing only on a headline transfer fee. For regular Revolut users, any subscription cost should also be included in the overall comparison.

Cards and spending abroad

The Wise card has no monthly subscription. US pricing currently lists a USD 9 charge to obtain the physical card. When a customer already holds the purchase currency, Wise can deduct it directly. Otherwise Wise converts from an available balance using its conversion pricing.

Revolut offers cards across its Standard, Premium and Metal plans. Standard currently has no monthly plan fee, Premium costs USD 9.99 per month and Metal costs USD 16.99 per month. Paid plans add benefits and different fee allowances, but those extras only represent value if the customer uses them enough to offset the subscription.

With either card, choose the local currency when a merchant terminal offers to convert the transaction. Accepting dynamic currency conversion can replace the provider's conversion with a merchant or terminal operator's rate.

ATM withdrawals

Wise's current US pricing provides up to USD 250 of ATM withdrawals per calendar month without a Wise ATM withdrawal fee. After that allowance, Wise charges USD 1.95 plus 1.95% for each withdrawal. An ATM operator can add its own charge, and a Wise conversion fee can apply if the required currency is not already held.

Revolut does not charge for withdrawals at its in-network ATMs, although third-party fees may still apply. Standard customers currently pay 2% at out-of-network ATMs. Premium includes up to USD 800 of out-of-network withdrawals per rolling month before the 2% fee, and Metal includes up to USD 1,200.

ATM exchange fees are separate from withdrawal fees. A Revolut withdrawal that requires a conversion can still be affected by the plan's exchange allowance and out-of-market-hours rules.

Receiving money and account details

Wise offers eligible US customers USD routing and account details for receiving ACH and domestic wire payments. ACH receipts are generally free, while the current Wise fee for receiving a USD wire or Swift payment is USD 6.11. Wise also offers local receiving details for several other supported currencies, subject to eligibility and route restrictions.

Revolut US customers currently receive local USD account and routing details, local GBP details and Swift details for international transfers in supported currencies. That is useful, but it does not mean every currency has local domestic receiving details. Customers should use the account details shown for the selected currency in the app.

Both products provide payment functionality through partner and regulated entities; neither should be described as a conventional US branch bank account solely because local receiving details are available.

Who should choose Wise?

Wise may be the better fit when:

  • the main need is international bank transfers;
  • a mid-market exchange rate with a separate fee is preferred;
  • the customer does not want a monthly subscription;
  • local receiving details in several supported currencies are useful.

Who should choose Revolut?

Revolut may be the better fit when:

  • the customer wants an app-based account for spending, exchange and transfers;
  • in-network ATM access is valuable;
  • the benefits of Premium or Metal justify the subscription;
  • the customer can manage Standard-plan allowances and exchange timing.
